“WE FOUND THE WORM,” Rose reported the moment Isaac walked back into the secured cyberwarfare room. “And we have a problem. A big, ugly, stinking pile of shit-type problem.”

He winced.

“Okay, Rhianna, what exactly is this problem?”

She sighed.

“We know the code. But it’s not ours—and there’s only one organization in the Confederacy with better code than CSF Cyberwarfare.”

“I’m not following,” he admitted. “So, this code is better?”

“This worm is to our software arsenal what a pulse rifle is to a hunting rifle,” Rose said grimly. “It sliced through our military-grade firewalls like they weren’t even there, and the only reason we found it at all was because we had a full mirror of the Election Commission computers from this morning.”

“Knutson’s going to paper backup ballots as we speak,” Isaac told her. “They’ll secure the receipt boxes and make sure the right votes get recorded. Whoever this is, they haven’t broken the election.”

“That’s good, but that’s not the problem,” the coms officer replied. “Sir, the only people who’d have access to this kind of code are the Confederacy Secret Police.”

That froze him in his tracks.

“There shouldn’t be any CSP agents here,” he noted slowly. “It’s not like the people responsible for maintaining the Confederacy were going to be dissidents and troublemakers.”

“Unless someone wanted to make sure we got screwed,” Rose said. “Probably without the First Admiral’s knowledge; she seems to have been actually trying to give us a decent chance.”

“If there’s a CSP cell on this planet, I want to know,” Isaac said grimly. “Especially if they were trying to swing the election. Make damn sure we’re tracking everything they do. I want to know who they tried to make win!”
